Columbia: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, causing severe structural damage, killing at least 132 people, and injuring nearly 570 others. The intense tremors forced residents across affected regions to evacuate buildings, with strong shocks felt in the capital, Bogotá, as well as neighboring Ecuador and Venezuela. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake registered an initial magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of 115 kilometers, though the Colombian Geological Service initially reported it as a 6.7-magnitude event.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located near San José del Palmar, roughly 400 kilometers west of Bogotá. Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management confirmed a magnitude of 7.4 at a depth of 79 kilometers. Chocó Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi reported widespread structural destruction and numerous casualties in the departmental capital of Quibdó, as emergency services and local authorities continue assessing the full extent of the devastation across the region.
