Chandigarh: The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar districts on Tuesday, while predicting partly cloudy skies with light showers for Chandigarh. The state’s overall average maximum temperature dropped by 1.3 degrees Celsius, with Gurdaspur recording the highest temperature at 35.8 degrees Celsius and Chandigarh recording 31.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below the seasonal average.
Rainfall was recorded across five districts on Monday, with Amritsar receiving the highest amount at 53 mm, followed by light precipitation at Thein Dam in Pathankot and Ropar KVK in Rupnagar, alongside trace rainfall in Ludhiana and Patiala. According to Surender Paul, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, an active western disturbance will maintain rainy conditions across Punjab over the coming week, bringing light to moderate rainfall across multiple districts on August 11 and August 13.
In state energy developments, Punjab’s peak electricity demand reached 13,300 MW late Monday evening, while overall consumption remained slightly below the allocated drawl schedule. Meanwhile, water levels at major regional reservoirs remain well within safe capacity limits, with Bhakra Dam recorded at 1,614 feet—66 feet below its maximum mark of 1,680 feet—and Pong Dam standing at 1,348.58 feet, approximately 41.42 feet below its capacity threshold.
