Guwahati: Assam continued to grapple with a severe flood situation on Monday, with the death toll from this year’s deluge rising to 100 after two more fatalities were reported, officials said.
The latest deaths were recorded in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts over the past 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Floodwaters have affected more than 1.37 lakh residents across seven districts, with hundreds of villages remaining submerged. ASDMA’s latest assessment said 456 villages are currently under water, while standing crops spread across more than 11,900 hectares have suffered damage.
Golaghat has emerged as the worst-affected district, with nearly 70,000 people impacted by the floods. Sivasagar follows with around 40,000 affected residents, while more than 16,000 people in Jorhat are also dealing with inundated areas.
Authorities remain concerned about rising river levels, particularly as several water bodies are either approaching or have crossed their danger marks. The Dhansiri river is flowing above the danger level at Golaghat and Numaligarh, while the Kushiyara has crossed the threshold at Sribhumi.
Officials have advised residents living near the Dhansiri to maintain a safe distance from the river as its water level continues to rise.
Relief operations are continuing across the affected areas. The administration has set up 125 relief camps and distribution centres in six districts, where more than 49,000 people are currently receiving assistance.
Despite ongoing rescue and relief efforts, authorities remain watchful as the swelling rivers threaten to push floodwaters into additional areas. District administrations are continuing to monitor vulnerable locations and provide support to people displaced or affected by the inundation.
With the monsoon continuing to influence river levels, officials are maintaining heightened preparedness while relief agencies work to meet the immediate needs of affected communities.
