Bathinda: Punjab Police carried out an operation, visiting the homes of several farmer leaders across the state in an effort to stop a proposed demonstration in Bathinda. The action was aimed at preventing farmers from holding a sit-in outside the district collector’s office later in the day.
According to sources, police teams reached the residences of prominent farm union figures early in the morning to place them under house arrest. However, senior leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan was reportedly not present at his home when the police arrived.
Similar preventive measures were also taken in Sangrur district, where law enforcement personnel conducted checks at the homes of farmer representatives linked to the planned agitation.
Police officials said the steps were taken as a precautionary move to maintain law and order, amid concerns that the protest could disrupt administrative work in Bathinda. No official statement has yet been issued on how many leaders were detained or for how long the restrictions will remain in place.
Farmer organisations, meanwhile, criticised the action, calling it an attempt to curb democratic dissent. Further developments are expected as unions assess their next course of action.
