Jalandhar: A senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was shot dead in a targeted attack in Jalandhar on Friday, triggering shock and tension in the city’s upscale Model Town area.
The victim, identified as Lucky Oberoi, sustained multiple bullet injuries after unknown assailants fired at him near a gurdwara. He was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his wounds, hospital sources confirmed.
Preliminary accounts suggest Oberoi had driven to the gurdwara in his SUV and had just stepped out after parking when two unidentified attackers on a motorcycle approached and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Three bullets reportedly struck him.
AAP Jalandhar Cantt constituency in-charge Rajwinder Thiara said Oberoi followed a fixed routine of visiting the gurdwara daily, indicating that the attackers may have been tracking his movements. “It appears the assailants were well aware of his schedule,” Thiara said.
Police teams reached the spot soon after the incident and cordoned off the area. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and speaking to witnesses to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the killing.
The incident has raised concerns over security in the city, with political leaders across parties condemning the attack. Authorities said further information would be shared as the investigation progresses.
