Chandigarh: Residents of Punjab and Chandigarh are likely to experience a welcome change in weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted increased rainfall activity beginning Wednesday, with the monsoon expected to become more active over the next few days.
After days of intense heat and high humidity, light showers are expected to begin in parts of the region before rainfall intensifies between July 2 and July 4. The weather department has issued a Yellow Alert, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in several districts.
Although temperatures have shown a slight decline over the past 24 hours, the overall heat remains above seasonal norms. Officials said the average daytime temperature across Punjab continues to stay more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal, while warm nights have added to the discomfort in many districts.
Faridkot remained the hottest location in the state on Tuesday, recording a maximum temperature of 43.8°C, while several other districts also reported unusually high nighttime temperatures.
In Chandigarh, the maximum temperature settled at 37°C, with the minimum recorded at 29.8°C. Weather officials expect cloud cover to increase over the coming days, creating favourable conditions for intermittent showers and thunderstorms. The city’s daytime temperature is likely to fall to around 33°C as rainfall activity gathers pace.
Meteorologists said the strengthening monsoon current is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across Punjab and Chandigarh later this week. Apart from lowering temperatures, the showers are expected to improve moisture conditions and bring much-needed relief from persistent humidity.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during periods of thunderstorms and strong winds. People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under trees, secure loose outdoor objects and follow weather advisories issued by local administrations.
The IMD believes the upcoming spell of rain will mark a significant improvement in monsoon activity across the region, with several areas expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall before the weekend.
