Amritsar: The family of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, a District Manager (DM) who died by suicide last month, held a press conference on Sunday to demand justice and express dissatisfaction with the ongoing police investigation. Upinder Kaur, the widow of the deceased official, addressed reporters, highlighting that despite 35 days passing since the incident, only one arrest has been made. She alleged that several influential individuals named in connection with the case remain at large, leading the family to lose faith in the Punjab Police’s ability to conduct a fair inquiry.
Upinder Kaur raised specific concerns regarding Sukhdev Bhullar, the father of former Cabinet Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar. She claimed that Sukhdev Bhullar had presented misleading arguments in court to secure bail, portraying himself as an elderly individual. She questioned how he could apply for government tenders in his own name if he was claiming physical frailty due to age. The family further alleged that the police have neither arrested nor properly recorded the statements of the former minister’s personal assistant (PA), his father, or several other unidentified suspects allegedly involved in the matter.
Expressing deep suspicion over the procedural delays, Kaur noted that statements under Section 164 of the CrPC have yet to be recorded. Due to this perceived negligence, the family announced their intention to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday to file a petition seeking a transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Upinder Kaur stated that the local police appear to be under political pressure, and a central agency probe is the only way to ensure the culprits are held accountable.
During the emotional briefing, Kaur emphasized the devastating impact on her children and refuted rumors regarding a potential out-of-court settlement. She clarified that the family would never compromise with those responsible for her husband’s death and expressed fears for their safety if the accused remain free. “My home has been destroyed, and my children are pining for their father; the guilty must face the harshest punishment,” she told the media, reaffirming the family’s resolve to fight the legal battle to its conclusion.
