Chandigarh: The southwest monsoon continues to remain active over Punjab and Chandigarh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting another spell of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the region over the next several days. Weather officials have warned that unsettled conditions are likely to persist until July 9.

Rainfall was reported from multiple districts during the past 24 hours, bringing noticeable relief from the hot and humid weather that had gripped the region. The showers also contributed to a decline in both maximum and minimum temperatures across many parts of the state.

In Gurdaspur district, heavy rainfall led to a breach in an embankment near Behrampur village, allowing water to spread into adjoining agricultural fields. Local authorities said water levels have gradually started receding and the situation is now stabilising. Residents, however, pointed out that the same embankment had suffered damage during last year’s floods and claimed permanent restoration work had not been completed.

The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh has issued a Yellow Alert for several districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, where moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph is expected.

Rainfall during the last 24 hours was recorded at several locations, with Gurdaspur receiving the highest precipitation, followed by Pathankot, Faridkot, Mohali, Patiala, Chandigarh and Amritsar. The widespread showers helped reduce daytime temperatures, making weather conditions considerably more comfortable across the region.

The cooler conditions were reflected in temperature readings as well. Samrala in Ludhiana district recorded the highest daytime temperature in Punjab, while Bathinda registered the lowest minimum temperature during the night. Chandigarh also witnessed a noticeable fall in temperature after intermittent rainfall.

Elsewhere, a portion of a multipurpose hall at CTET College in Chandigarh’s Sector 26 collapsed following the rains. Officials confirmed that the structure had already been declared unsafe and was not in use, preventing any injuries or casualties.

The IMD has advised residents to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. People have been urged to avoid standing near trees, electric poles and unstable structures during lightning activity, while motorists have been asked to drive cautiously through waterlogged stretches and avoid unnecessary travel whenever weather conditions deteriorate.

With the monsoon expected to remain active throughout the coming week, authorities are keeping disaster response teams on standby to deal with any localised flooding or weather-related emergencies.
