Shimla: Heavy rainfall triggered a series of landslides across Himachal Pradesh, causing extensive damage in several districts and leaving three workers trapped beneath debris in Sirmaur. Rescue teams launched a search operation on Wednesday after difficult weather conditions prevented immediate access to the site.
The incident took place at Kamrau in the Bagnadhar area of Sirmaur, where two trucks and a tipper were struck by falling rocks while workers were engaged at a limestone mine.
Rescue operation begins after overnight delay
The landslide occurred at around 4 pm on Tuesday. However, continuous movement of rocks and boulders from the hillside made it too dangerous for rescue personnel to approach the location during the evening.
The operation was subsequently started on Wednesday morning. Teams are working to clear the debris and locate the three workers believed to be trapped underneath.
The prolonged delay and the large quantity of debris have made the rescue effort challenging.
More than 350 roads affected
The impact of the rainfall was not limited to Sirmaur. Heavy showers during Tuesday evening and overnight caused landslides and road blockages across Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Mandi.
More than 350 roads were reported closed to vehicular movement following landslides, falling debris and other weather-related damage.
Officials and road maintenance teams are working to restore connectivity wherever conditions permit.
Vehicles damaged in Shimla
Shimla city also witnessed incidents of falling trees and debris from slopes. More than five vehicles were reportedly damaged after trees and material came down onto roads.
The continuing rain has increased the vulnerability of hill slopes, creating additional risks for commuters and residents living in landslide-prone areas.
Homes and commercial establishments hit by rainwater
Several low-lying areas also reported water entering houses and shops.
Parwanoo and Kasauli in Solan, parts of Shimla, Dharampur in Mandi and areas of Sirmaur were among the locations affected by the intense rainfall.
Waterlogging disrupted normal life in some areas, while accumulated debris further complicated movement on local roads.
Weather continues to pose challenges
The widespread damage comes amid an active monsoon spell in the hill state. Persistent rainfall has increased the risk of additional landslides and falling rocks, particularly along vulnerable mountain roads and construction zones.
Authorities are continuing to monitor affected locations while rescue and restoration teams remain engaged in clearing debris and reopening blocked routes.
