Shopian: A large-scale anti-terror operation continued in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district as security forces intensified efforts to apprehend or neutralise two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants believed to be hiding inside a densely vegetated orchard.
The operation was launched after surveillance cameras reportedly captured the movement of the two suspected militants in the Meemandar area. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, personnel from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded the locality and began an extensive search operation.
Officials said multiple villages in the area were systematically searched while security teams established a multi-layered cordon to prevent the suspects from escaping. Additional troops have also been deployed around the orchard, with every possible exit point placed under close surveillance.
According to officials, the two suspected militants have been identified as Latif and Zakir, both residents of Kulgam district. Security agencies believe Zakir became associated with the banned outfit in 2024, while Latif is suspected to have joined the group a year later.
The operation turned into an encounter after the militants allegedly fired at advancing security personnel. Troops responded immediately, leading to an exchange of gunfire. No casualties among security forces have been reported so far.
Authorities said the dense foliage typical of the summer season poses a challenge for surveillance, allowing militants to use natural cover to evade detection. To counter this, specialised counter-insurgency units have strengthened the outer perimeter and are conducting coordinated search operations using advanced surveillance methods.
Security officials noted that Shopian remains strategically significant because of its connectivity to several parts of south and central Kashmir. Preventing local militants from operating in the region is considered crucial, as they are often linked to logistics support, recruitment and facilitation of terrorist activities.
The operation is expected to continue until the orchard and adjoining areas are fully sanitised. Officials have urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and avoid entering restricted zones until the search concludes.
