Mohali: A family associated with the Aam Aadmi Party in Mohali has allegedly been targeted in an extortion attempt, with the husband of a sitting party councillor receiving a demand for Rs 2 crore along with a threat to kill him if the money was not arranged.
The complainant has named three individuals in his police complaint, including a person identified as Arju, who allegedly claimed to be associated with the Lawrence gang. Following the complaint, Balongi police have registered a case under Sections 308(4) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are working to establish the identities and whereabouts of the accused.
Caller approached councillor’s son after unanswered calls
According to the complaint, the incident began on October 4 when the victim was watching a match at the Phase-9 hockey stadium. He allegedly received a WhatsApp call from an international number but disconnected it. A second call from the same number was answered, although the caller did not speak.
At around 6:30 pm, another call came from a different number, which the complainant did not answer. The caller subsequently contacted his son through an international number and asked whether he was the son of the AAP councillor.
After the son confirmed his identity, the caller reportedly complained that his father had been rejecting the calls. He then introduced himself as Arju, claiming links with the Lawrence gang, and allegedly instructed the family to arrange ₹2 crore. The caller also threatened to kill the complainant if the demand was not met.
Family seeks police protection
In his complaint, the victim identified himself as an AAP worker and said his wife currently serves as a councillor. He assists her with political and official responsibilities.
He further stated that he and his son look after approximately 11 acres of ancestral agricultural land in the Baliyali village area near Airport Road. The complainant suspects that the extortion demand may be connected to the family’s circumstances and has asked police to ensure their safety.
Balongi police have taken up the matter and registered an FIR against three people. Investigators are collecting information about the accused and examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged calls. The claims made in the complaint are yet to be established through the investigation.
