New Delhi: In a tribute to the sacrifice of a brave Army officer, the Ministry of Railways has renamed Kathua Railway Station in Jammu and Kashmir as “Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Railway Station Kathua.” The decision comes after sustained public demand and has been formally notified by Northern Railway.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh shared the development on social media, describing it as a moment of pride for Kathua and a fitting recognition of Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary’s service to the nation. He said the renaming reflects the collective sentiment of the people who wanted the officer’s legacy to be permanently associated with the district.
According to the notification issued by Northern Railway, the station’s official name has been revised, while the station code has also been updated to MSKT. The changes have been incorporated in railway records and will be reflected in future operational documents.
The circular clarified that only the station’s name and alpha code have been modified. Other operational details, including the numerical station code and references in railway publications, will continue to remain unchanged until further updates are issued by the concerned authorities.
Railway officials have directed all departments to implement the revised nomenclature across official records, reservation systems, signage, and communication channels in accordance with prescribed procedures.
The move has been welcomed by residents and veterans, who have long demanded that the memory of Captain Sunil Kumar Choudary be honoured through a permanent public landmark. Supporters believe the renamed railway station will serve as a lasting reminder of the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces while inspiring future generations.
Authorities are expected to complete the transition to the new name across railway infrastructure and passenger information systems in the coming weeks.
