Chandigarh: Haryana Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, and Antyodaya, Krishan Kumar Bedi, said that children with special needs are an invaluable asset to society and the state. With proper guidance, training, encouragement and opportunities, they can be integrated into the mainstream of society. The government’s objective is not merely to provide facilities to persons with disabilities, but also to develop their abilities and enable them to lead independent and dignified lives.

The Minister was addressing the gathering on Friday at the inauguration of the renovated multipurpose hall at the State Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SIRTAR) in Rohtak.

Bedi said that SIRTAR has been playing an important role for a long time in the training, rehabilitation and skill development of children with special needs and persons with disabilities. The courses offered by the institute, including D.Ed. Special Education (IDD), B.Ed. Special Education (ID), M.Ed. Special Education (ID), Post Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Psychology, and Certificate Programme in Community-Based Inclusive Development, are contributing to the development of skilled human resources in the fields of special education and rehabilitation.

On the occasion, Additional Chief Secretary of the SEWA Department, Dr. G. Anupama, said that SIRTAR is an important specialised institution in the state, with the objective of developing trained human resources in the field of special education. This makes the institute’s role even more significant.
