Gazipur: A Hindu businessman was beaten to death on Saturday in Bangladesh’s Gazipur district, prompting police to detain three individuals as part of an ongoing investigation, officials confirmed.
The victim, identified as 55-year-old Liton Chandra Ghosh, owned a local eatery and sweet shop known as Boishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel. According to preliminary police findings, Ghosh was attacked late in the morning on Boro Nogor Road in the Kaliganj area.
Local residents said Ghosh, popularly known as Kali, was assaulted with a shovel during an altercation, sustaining fatal injuries. He was declared dead shortly after the incident. Authorities said the motive behind the attack is still being examined, and statements from witnesses are being recorded.
Police officials confirmed that three suspects have been taken into custody for questioning, adding that a case has been registered and further arrests may follow based on the outcome of the probe.
Second Fatal Incident in a Day
The killing comes less than 24 hours after another Hindu man died in a separate incident in Rajbari district. While officials have not established a direct link between the two cases, the back-to-back deaths have drawn attention amid concerns over the safety of minority communities.
In the Rajbari case, the victim was identified as 30-year-old Ripon Saha, an employee at a petrol pump in the Goalanda Mor area. According to police and eyewitness accounts cited by local media, Saha was run over by a vehicle after attempting to stop it from leaving the fuel station without paying for fuel worth around Tk 5,000.
Police later seized the vehicle involved, a black SUV, and arrested its owner, Abul Hashem, along with the driver, Kamal Hossain. Rajbari Sadar police chief Khondakar Ziaur Rahman said a murder case would be registered, stating that the worker was struck deliberately as the vehicle sped away.
Authorities said investigations in both cases are ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation until inquiries are completed.
