Chandigarh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heat wave conditions across parts of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana between April 21 and April 23, following a brief spell of gusty winds and thunderstorms over the weekend.
According to the weather department, despite isolated light rainfall in Punjab over the past 24 hours, both maximum and minimum temperatures have remained significantly above seasonal averages. The rise in temperatures is expected to intensify in the coming days, with dry weather conditions likely to prevail across the region.
Data from the IMD shows that Bathinda recorded the highest maximum temperature at 41.1°C, while Adampur reported the lowest minimum temperature at 18.4°C. These readings were several degrees higher than normal for this time of year, indicating a steady warming trend.
Interestingly, April has seen higher-than-usual rainfall so far. Between April 1 and April 19, Punjab received 26.2 mm of rain—well above the long-term average—while overall spring rainfall since March 1 has also exceeded normal levels. However, this surplus rainfall has not prevented the onset of rising heat.
Meteorologists attribute the changing weather pattern to multiple atmospheric systems, including a weakening western disturbance and the persistence of cyclonic circulation over parts of Rajasthan. Additionally, strong subtropical westerly jet streams continue to influence weather conditions over north India.
The IMD has forecast largely dry conditions in Punjab from April 20 to April 26, with temperatures expected to climb by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Heat wave conditions, along with unusually warm nights, may be experienced at several locations during this period.
Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, including avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Authorities are also expected to remain on alert to manage any heat-related health concerns.
