Chandigarh: Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase its annual MBBS intake from 150 to 200 seats beginning with the 2026-27 academic session.
The approval will allow the premier government medical institution to admit 50 additional undergraduate medical students every year, creating more opportunities for aspiring doctors from Chandigarh and neighbouring states.
The increase in seats comes as part of GMCH-32’s continued expansion of its academic capacity. The institution has been working towards enhancing its infrastructure, faculty strength and teaching facilities in line with the standards laid down by the National Medical Commission.
Medical education experts believe the additional seats will help address the growing demand for quality medical education while contributing to the country’s need for more trained healthcare professionals. The move is also expected to strengthen the region’s healthcare ecosystem by producing a larger pool of qualified doctors in the coming years.
The GMCH administration described the NMC’s approval as a significant step in the institution’s academic journey. Officials said the enhanced intake reflects the college’s sustained focus on maintaining high educational standards and meeting the regulatory requirements set by the commission.
Widely regarded as one of North India’s leading government medical colleges, GMCH-32 has built a reputation for quality medical education, patient care and clinical training. With the expanded intake set to take effect from the next academic session, the institution is expected to play an even greater role in preparing the next generation of medical professionals.
