Thailand: A tragic accident unfolded in Thailand on Wednesday morning when a passenger train running from Bangkok to the country’s northeastern region was forced off the tracks after being struck by a falling construction crane. At least 12 people lost their lives in the incident, while over 30 others sustained injuries, according to police officials.

The mishap occurred in the Sikhio area of Nakhon Ratchasima province, roughly 230 kilometres from the Thai capital. The train was en route to Ubon Ratchathani when a crane, reportedly part of ongoing high-speed rail construction work, collapsed onto one of the train’s coaches as it passed through the site.

The impact caused several compartments to derail, and a brief fire broke out soon after the collision. Emergency responders managed to bring the flames under control, preventing further damage.

Local authorities said rescue and relief operations were launched immediately, with police, firefighters, and medical teams rushing to the scene. Injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, while efforts continued to secure the area and assist those trapped.

An investigation has been initiated to determine what led to the crane’s collapse and to assess whether safety protocols at the construction site were followed. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about construction safety near active railway lines, especially as Thailand expands its rail infrastructure.
