Amritsar: Tensions flared in the Valla area of Amritsar after a local Punjabi youth was assaulted in broad daylight by a migrant worker from Bihar at a vegetable market, sparking sharp reactions from Sikh organizations and social groups. What fueled further outrage was the police’s decision to detain the victim alongside the accused.

According to those present at the scene, the altercation stemmed from a financial dispute already under legal consideration. Despite the ongoing court matter, the migrant worker, reportedly accompanied by others, allegedly confronted and beat the local youth in public.

The incident drew swift protests outside the Valla police station, where groups led by Sikh activist Yoga Singh Wadala criticized law enforcement for what they called a “misplaced and insensitive response.” Wadala emphasized that the victim should have received protection, not custody, and highlighted the underlying tension between local residents and migrant laborers.

Baba Sunny Nath, another prominent voice in the protest, called for the expulsion of illegal migrants from Punjab, arguing that the incident reflects a larger issue. “When locals are being beaten in their own land and the police stand by the aggressors, something is seriously wrong,” he said, demanding decisive action from the administration.

In response, Police Officer Gurcharan Singh stated that the matter involved a monetary dispute and both parties had been brought in for questioning to defuse tensions. “They were briefly detained and later released with warnings. We’re encouraging both sides to settle the issue peacefully,” he said.

Despite the release of both individuals, local anger remains palpable, with community leaders warning that continued inaction could lead to further unrest.
