UGC Declares Alwar-Based Institution Fake; Warns Students Against Unauthorised Degrees

Alwar: The University Grants Commission (GC) on Sunday, March 29, 2026, issued a public notice declaring the Rajeev Gandhi Institute of Technology & Management, located in Alwar, Rajasthan, as a fake institution. In a formal release from New Delhi, the statutory body clarified that the institute is not recognised under the UGC Act and is not authorised to award any undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. The commission emphasized that any certificates or degrees issued by this entity would be considered invalid for the purposes of pursuing higher education or securing government employment.

The regulator’s warning comes as part of its ongoing crackdown on “self-styled” institutions that operate in violation of established educational standards. The UGC urged students, parents, and the general public to exercise extreme caution and verify the credentials of any technical or management institute before seeking admission. Officials stated that such institutions often mislead the public by using names similar to established universities, potentially jeopardizing the career prospects of unsuspecting candidates.

To protect the interests of the student community, the UGC has reinforced its online portal where the consolidated list of all recognised and fake universities is maintained. This latest declaration follows a series of inspections aimed at identifying unapproved educational centres across Northern India. The commission reiterated that degrees can only be awarded by universities established by a Central, State, or Provincial Act, or those specifically empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer such titles.
