New Delhi: Ten people, including a three-month-old infant and a ten-year-old boy, were injured early Friday morning when a massive hydraulic crane collapsed onto residential structures, vehicles, and railway infrastructure in the Kurla East area of Mumbai. The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. in Indira Nagar near the site of a planned 17-storey building, where preparations were underway for a demolition project.
According to municipal officials, the crane was being manoeuvred to lift heavy excavation machinery when it lost balance on soft ground and tipped over. As it fell, parts of the heavy equipment struck nearby homes in Qureshi Nagar, crashed through a compound wall of a neighbouring housing complex, damaged a roadway in Samrat Ashok Nagar, and crushed three to four parked cars. The falling structure also severed high-tension overhead electrical cables on Central Railway’s Kurla-Trombay goods line, temporarily halting freight train operations in the sector.
First responders and civic authorities transported eight of the injured victims to the civic-run Sion Hospital, while two others received treatment at Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Medical staff confirmed that all ten individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remain in stable condition.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which was executing the demolition operation, stated that unstable ground conditions compromised the crane’s balance during positioning. The agency confirmed that the site has since been secured, specialized machinery has been deployed on priority to clear the wreckage, and full medical assistance is being provided to those affected.
