New Delhi: Police personnel deployed near the Central Secretariat Metro Station fired teargas shells on Monday afternoon to disperse a massive crowd of protesters attempting to march toward Parliament House. The demonstrators, mobilised under the “Chalo Sansad” call by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), attempted to push past security cordons on Raisina Road to reach Sansad Bhawan. Law enforcement authorities deployed lathi-charges and tear gas to repel the advancing crowd, resulting in heavy scuffles and injuries. The New Delhi district remains under strict prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, meaning the unsanctioned march was blocked to secure key government installations as the Monsoon Session of Parliament got underway.
Amid the escalating tension on the streets, there was a significant development at the primary protest site at Jantar Mantar, where three student leaders officially ended their multi-day hunger strike. The decision to break the fast came after senior opposition leaders visited the demonstration site and assured the student representatives that their core demands regarding educational reforms and a thorough probe into examination irregularities would be aggressively raised on the floor of both Houses of Parliament. The agitation, which has drawn widespread attention over the past few weeks, continues to demand systemic accountability and structural overhauls in national competitive exams.
Simultaneously, the legal battle surrounding the protest intensified as the wife of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk moved the Delhi High Court once again on Monday morning. Her fresh plea requests the judiciary to issue urgent directives to shift Wangchuk, who had been forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar by police over the weekend, to a private medical facility to monitor his deteriorating health. The High Court is scheduled to hear the matter in an afternoon session today. Meanwhile, CJP leadership claimed that administrative officials have finally reached out to initiate formal dialogue, with preliminary talks currently underway to de-escalate the ongoing standoff.
