Amritsar: In a major crackdown on organised crime, Amritsar Rural Police have arrested seven accused and seized a hand grenade, two pistols and 3.491 kg of heroin while dismantling an alleged network involved in drug trafficking, illegal arms and explosives smuggling.
According to preliminary findings, the accused were allegedly in touch with smugglers based abroad who were supplying illegal weapons for further distribution among criminal elements. Investigators are now working to establish the extent of the network and identify others who may be involved in the operation.
Police have registered separate FIRs at Chatiwind and Lopoke police stations in connection with the cases. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the seized contraband and weapons, identify potential recipients and establish the network’s backward and forward linkages.
The recovery of the hand grenade and firearms, alongside the heroin consignment, has brought the alleged nexus between drug trafficking and illegal arms supply into focus. The ongoing probe is expected to shed more light on the network’s operations and its possible connections with foreign-based handlers.
Punjab Police reiterated their commitment to taking stringent action against drug traffickers, illegal weapons and explosives smugglers, and organised criminal networks, stating that efforts to dismantle such operations remain crucial to maintaining peace and security across the state.
The investigation is continuing, and further details may emerge as police pursue leads connected to the arrested accused and the seized material.
