Mansa: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Punjab’s Mansa district, with investigators set to examine whether the case is connected to the alleged open sale of banned psychotropic substances at local chemist shops.
A CBI team reached Mansa police station on the night before the announced takeover to collect records and seizure documents from Punjab Police. The agency has also issued a formal communication to the police regarding the transfer of the case.
Alongside investigating the murder, the central agency will look into the circumstances surrounding the alleged availability and sale of prohibited psychotropic drugs through medical stores. Investigators are expected to examine relevant evidence and establish whether any links exist between the alleged drug trade and the killing.
Officials said the CBI would seek custody of chemist Ashwine Kumar and other individuals connected with the case as part of its investigation. Further details about the proposed custody proceedings were not immediately available.
The family of Jhota was expected to reach the Mansa Circuit House at 11.30 am, where a team led by a senior Deputy Inspector General-level officer was scheduled to examine them as part of the inquiry.
Forensic specialists, drug control officials and other experts were also expected to arrive in Mansa to assist investigators. Their involvement is expected to support the examination of evidence and the investigation into the alleged sale of restricted substances.
The transfer marks a new phase in the investigation, with the CBI taking charge of records and evidence previously handled by Punjab Police.
Investigators are now expected to examine the circumstances of Jhota’s murder, the evidence collected so far and any possible connections with the alleged drug distribution network. The findings of the investigation will determine whether the suspected links can be established.
