NHAI Turns to Artificial Intelligence to Predict Highway Repairs Before Damage Worsens

New Delhi: In a significant push towards smarter infrastructure management, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun implementing an AI-enabled maintenance system designed to identify road defects and structural issues before they become serious problems. The move marks a shift from routine repair-based maintenance to a data-driven approach focused on prevention and long-term asset management.

Officials say the new strategy is aimed at improving the lifespan and performance of highways across the country while reducing the need for costly emergency repairs. By relying on real-time monitoring and predictive analysis, authorities hope to detect early warning signs of deterioration and intervene before road conditions worsen.

At the heart of the initiative is a network of advanced survey technologies being deployed across national highways. Specialised Network Survey Vehicles are collecting detailed information on pavement conditions, including surface roughness, cracks, wheel-track depressions and other indicators of wear and tear.

To strengthen monitoring capabilities, NHAI is also using drones to create digital records of highway assets and inspect infrastructure from the air. The drone-based system helps officials monitor bridges, road corridors and encroachments while maintaining a comprehensive visual database of the network.

Another important component is the use of Falling Weight Deflectometer technology, which evaluates the structural health of roads by measuring their response to simulated traffic loads. This enables engineers to identify hidden weaknesses beneath the surface before visible damage appears.

The authority has also started deploying artificial intelligence-powered dashboard camera systems on operational highway stretches. These systems can automatically identify maintenance-related concerns such as potholes, damaged safety barriers, malfunctioning streetlights and drainage issues, reducing dependence on manual inspections.

A key aspect of the programme involves bringing together information generated by different technologies onto a single digital platform. Data collected from survey vehicles, drones, dashcams and structural assessments will be integrated into one centralised system, creating a comprehensive picture of highway conditions nationwide.

Officials believe the unified platform will improve coordination among agencies and provide decision-makers with up-to-date information on asset performance. Instead of relying on isolated inspections, engineers will be able to monitor trends and assess risks across the network in a more systematic manner.

The long-term objective is to enable predictive maintenance, where potential failures can be anticipated using historical records and ongoing monitoring. By identifying vulnerable stretches early, authorities can prioritise repairs, allocate resources more efficiently and minimise disruptions to traffic.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise highway management as India’s road network continues to expand. With technology playing an increasingly central role in infrastructure planning, NHAI expects the new framework to enhance road safety, improve service quality and ensure more sustainable maintenance of national highways in the years ahead.
