Pune: The Mumbai-Solapur Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22225) experienced a derailment on Monday evening, April 27, 2026, as it approached the Pune Railway Station. The incident occurred between 7:15 PM and 7:30 PM, specifically as the train was transitioning through the yard area to enter Platform 3. While the derailment caused significant disruption and concern among commuters, railway authorities confirmed that no passengers or crew members sustained injuries.
A single wheel assembly, or trolley, of the C-15 coach slipped off the tracks at a diamond crossing—a complex junction where two tracks intersect. Visuals from the scene captured the immediate aftermath, showing passengers disembarking at the outer signal and walking approximately 600 metres along the tracks with their luggage to reach the station. The abrupt stop initially caused panic, but the situation remained under control as railway staff arrived to assist with the evacuation.
Impact on Services and Recovery Efforts
The derailment led to a major logistical challenge for the Central Railway, resulting in delays for nearly nine other trains on the busy Mumbai-Pune corridor. Because the Vande Bharat rake was immovable, Solapur-bound passengers were stranded at Pune for several hours. To mitigate the delay, authorities arranged for the Deccan Queen’s rake to transport the passengers, which finally departed Pune around 1:00 AM on Tuesday.
-
Primary Cause: Preliminary investigations by railway officials pointed toward a “non-standard diamond crossing” in the Pune yard as the reason for the technical failure.
-
Modernization Plans: The specific crossing involved in the accident was already slated for an upgrade; however, the incident has prompted authorities to prioritize its replacement immediately as part of ongoing yard remodelling.
-
Safety Milestone: This event marks the first reported instance of a Vande Bharat Express coach derailing since the flagship “Make in India” train service was launched in 2019.
