FATEHGARH SAHIB — A man previously accused in a 2007 sacrilege case was allegedly hacked to death with sharp-edged weapons by unidentified attackers in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district late Monday night. The deceased has been identified as Mewa Singh, a resident of Turan village. According to initial reports released by local law enforcement, a group of unidentified assailants carried out the brutal assault before fleeing the scene of the crime, prompting a swift response from senior police officials who rushed to the area to oversee the preliminary investigation.

Police officials confirmed that Mewa Singh had been named in a 2007 sacrilege case linked to a village gurdwara and had previously served a designated jail term in connection with the incident. Authorities stated that no other criminal cases had been registered against him since his release, and he had been leading a quiet, normal life in his village. Following the incident, a formal murder case was registered against the unidentified suspects based on statements recorded from the victim’s family members.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikramjit Singh Ghuman stated that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise nature of the fatal injuries. Dedicated police teams have begun scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning local suspects to trace the escape route of the assailants. DSP Ghuman added that the exact motive behind the targeted killing is yet to be established, and investigators are currently examining all possible angles to ensure a thorough probe. Law enforcement agencies expressed confidence that the perpetrators would be identified and arrested shortly as the investigation intensifies.
