Jamshedpur: A loco pilot identified as G.K. Gautam was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants near Tatanagar Railway Station in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, early Monday morning. According to senior police officials, the incident occurred around 12:30 am when two motorcycle-borne individuals opened fire at Gautam from close range before fleeing the scene.
Gautam, who originally hails from Bihar, was immediately rushed to the nearby Railway Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The brazen nature of the attack in a high-security railway zone has sparked concerns regarding the safety of railway personnel and local law enforcement’s response to rising crime in the industrial city.
City Superintendent of Police Lalit Meena visited the crime scene and confirmed that police have recovered empty cartridges from the spot. “Our teams are currently examining CCTV footage from cameras installed around the station and the approach roads to identify and nab the culprits,” Meena stated. He added that the investigation is being conducted from all possible angles.
Preliminary findings suggest that the murder might be linked to a long-standing land-related dispute, though the police have not yet ruled out other motives. A formal case has been registered, and forensic teams have collected evidence from the site. Railway unions and Gautam’s colleagues have expressed shock over the killing and are demanding a swift investigation and enhanced security measures for staff working late-night shifts.
