Ahmedabad; Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone by successfully transporting a live donor heart via train for the first time in the country. The organ was carried aboard Train No 20901 Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express from Surat to Ahmedabad. It was delivered in record time to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre in Ahmedabad, ensuring a successful life-saving transplantation.
The operation required precise planning and real-time coordination among Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat State Police, and medical teams to keep the journey within the organ’s strict viability window. Upon arrival, a seamless green corridor was established from Platform No 1 of Ahmedabad Railway Station directly to the hospital, enabling immediate, unimpeded transit through city traffic.
Ved Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager, Ahmedabad, highlighted that the mission demonstrated the high speed and operational reliability of the Vande Bharat Express while showcasing the railway network’s growing ability to support emergency medical transit. Officials praised the seamless synergy across security, transport, and medical teams that made the historic transit possible.
