New Delhi: The Centre has extended the service period of Agniveers by two years, potentially increasing their tenure under the Agnipath scheme from the existing four years to six years.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision on Wednesday, describing it as a “significant day” for the Indian Defence Forces and Agniveers.
He said the Cabinet had created a pathway for Agniveers to continue their association with the armed forces beyond their initial four-year service period.
Agnipath Scheme: What Has Changed?
Under the existing Agnipath scheme, Agniveers are recruited for a four-year term. The latest decision provides for a two-year extension, taking the potential service period to six years.
The announcement signals a change in the tenure framework for Agniveers. However, the available information does not specify whether the extension will apply automatically to all recruits or be subject to eligibility criteria and selection.
CDS Calls It A Significant Day For Armed Forces
Announcing the decision, General NS Raja Subramani said the Cabinet had opened a route for Agniveers to remain associated with the armed forces beyond their initial engagement.
He described the move as significant for both the defence forces and the Agniveers.
Further details on the implementation of the extension, including the eligibility conditions and the categories of Agniveers covered, are awaited.
