New Delhi: In a major relief for Indian travellers, Germany has announced the removal of the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens passing through German airports on their way to third countries.

The German Embassy in New Delhi said the decision has been published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette and will come into effect from June 3.

With the new rule, Indian passport holders transiting through Germany for onward international flights will no longer need to obtain an airport transit visa solely for changing planes at German airports.

The embassy described the move as a follow-up to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India earlier this year and said it reflects Berlin’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with New Delhi.

“This implements a result of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to India in January this year,” the German Embassy said in a statement.

The relaxation is expected to benefit thousands of Indian passengers who use major German aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich for connecting flights to destinations across Europe, North America and other regions.

According to the embassy, the decision is aimed at facilitating easier movement of people, deepening India-Germany relations and boosting economic and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

The move is also expected to reduce paperwork, save costs and make international travel more convenient for Indian citizens transiting through Germany.
