California: A Punjabi man has been arrested in California on charges of murdering his wife after her burnt remains were discovered in a neighbouring county. The victim, identified as Jasmine Gill, had been reported missing from Sacramento on October 4.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Jasmine was last seen at her residence on September 30. Her husband, Gurinder Gill, was subsequently questioned as investigators tried to establish what had happened to her.
Authorities later identified human remains recovered in El Dorado County as belonging to Jasmine. Gurinder was arrested on October 14 after investigators obtained a warrant charging him with murder.
The allegations against him remain subject to the legal process.
When Did Jasmine Gill Go Missing?
According to the information released by the Sheriff’s Office, Jasmine was last seen at her Sacramento residence on September 30. Her cousin filed a missing-person report on October 4, prompting an investigation into her disappearance.
As part of the initial inquiry, detectives questioned Gurinder about his wife’s whereabouts. Investigators later identified inconsistencies in his account, which became a significant part of the inquiry.
The case took a further turn after burnt human remains were discovered in El Dorado County on October 1. Following an examination, authorities confirmed that the remains belonged to Jasmine Gill.
The discovery helped investigators establish what had happened to the missing woman and led to further action in the case.
What Did Gurinder Gill Tell Investigators?
During questioning, Gurinder allegedly told investigators that his wife had been detained by agents of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while she was checking the mail.
However, according to the report, the Sheriff’s Office contacted ICE to verify the claim. The agency denied that any such operation had taken place at the residence.
Detectives subsequently found several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements as the investigation progressed. Authorities also learned that the couple had been involved in a legal dispute concerning divorce and child custody.
The reported dispute formed part of the background examined by investigators. The available information does not establish that it was the motive for the alleged crime.
When Was Gurinder Gill Arrested?
After the remains were identified and investigators developed their case, authorities obtained an arrest warrant charging Gurinder with murder. He was taken into custody on October 14.
Investigators also searched two residences associated with him as part of the inquiry.
Gurinder was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and, according to the report, was being held without bail. The Sheriff’s Office’s investigation concerns the circumstances surrounding Jasmine’s death and the events leading up to her disappearance.
The case has drawn attention because of the missing-person report, the discovery of the burnt remains in another county and the conflicting account allegedly provided during the investigation.
As the case proceeds, the charges against Gurinder will be addressed through the US legal system. An arrest and a murder charge do not, by themselves, establish guilt, and the allegations must be tested through the legal process.
