Final Notice Issued to Former Judge in Twisha Sharma Death Probe; Bail Under Fresh Scrutiny

Bhopal: The investigation into the death of Twisha Sharma has intensified, with Madhya Pradesh Police issuing a final notice to former judge Giribala Singh for recording her statement in the alleged dowry harassment case.

Officials confirmed that this is the third and last notice served to Singh, who was granted anticipatory bail earlier. Authorities have warned that failure to cooperate with the investigation could prompt police to approach the sessions court seeking cancellation of her bail.

Police sources said the notice was sent through multiple channels, including WhatsApp and postal communication, after earlier attempts to serve it at her residence were unsuccessful. As per procedure, women are generally questioned at their residence rather than being summoned to a police station or court.

The state government has also launched a separate review into whether Singh can continue serving as chairperson of the consumer court while facing criminal proceedings. The inquiry will assess the legal and administrative implications of her position.

Meanwhile, Twisha Sharma’s family has challenged the anticipatory bail granted to Singh in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Their legal counsel has argued that critical evidence and statutory presumptions relating to dowry death provisions under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam were not adequately considered during the bail hearing.

Under the law, if a woman dies under suspicious circumstances within seven years of marriage and there is evidence of dowry-related harassment shortly before her death, the court may presume the accused’s involvement unless disproved.

Police teams are simultaneously searching for Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, who remains absconding. A cash reward of ₹30,000 has been announced for credible information leading to his arrest. Multiple teams have been deployed across Madhya Pradesh and other states to trace him.

Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family has accused her husband and in-laws of sustained harassment linked to dowry demands, while the accused family has rejected the allegations and claimed she was battling substance abuse issues.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, and the probe remains underway.
