Philadelphia: A controversy has erupted within the Sikh community after a video surfaced showing police officers entering a Gurdwara in Philadelphia while wearing shoes during an intervention linked to a dispute over donation box funds. The footage has triggered sharp reactions from Sikh organisations in India and abroad, with many describing the incident as a serious breach of religious decorum.
According to reports, the police were called after an argument reportedly broke out between two groups during the counting of offerings collected in the Gurdwara’s donation box. The disagreement allegedly escalated over discrepancies in the amount being counted, prompting someone at the scene to contact law enforcement.
The video, which has since circulated widely on social media, shows officers entering the prayer area while still wearing footwear. One officer was also seen without a head covering, a violation of basic Sikh religious protocol inside Gurdwara premises. The officers appeared to be trying to calm those involved in the dispute, while members of the congregation continued arguing nearby.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Sikh leaders, who said such situations damage the sanctity of religious institutions and expose internal management failures.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has urged Sri Akal Takht Sahib to investigate the matter and identify those responsible for allowing the situation to deteriorate to the point where police intervention became necessary inside the holy premises.
Former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh GK also criticised the episode, saying disputes over financial offerings inside Gurdwaras set a damaging example and reflect poorly on the community’s ability to maintain discipline and respect for religious spaces.
SGPC members said the visuals had deeply hurt Sikh sentiments worldwide and stressed that the dignity of Guru Granth Sahib must remain paramount under all circumstances. They called for corrective action to ensure similar incidents are never repeated.
So far, neither the Philadelphia Gurdwara management nor local US authorities have issued an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, some members of the Sikh diaspora in the United States have pointed out that police officers are often required to remain in full uniform, including shoes, while on duty.
The episode has once again raised concerns over management disputes inside overseas Gurdwaras and renewed calls for stronger mechanisms to resolve internal conflicts without involving law enforcement inside sacred spaces.
