Delhi-NCR Sees Fresh CNG Price Increase as Global Energy Pressure Builds

Delhi: Compressed Natural Gas prices have gone up again across Delhi and surrounding regions, marking the second upward revision within 48 hours as global fuel markets remain under strain due to continued disruptions in West Asia.

With the latest adjustment taking effect from Saturday morning, CNG in the national capital now costs Rs 80.09 per kilogram. Rates have also risen across neighbouring cities, with consumers paying Rs 88.70 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad, while Gurugram’s revised price stands at Rs 85.12.

Other cities have also seen changes, including Rs 88.58 per kg in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli, while Kanpur has touched Rs 91.42. Prices in Hapur, Banda and Ajmer have also been revised upward.

Major gas supplier Indraprastha Gas Limited said the increase was introduced to partially absorb the pressure of higher procurement costs and the sharp strengthening of the US dollar, both of which have raised the cost of imported gas.

Despite the hike, the company maintained that CNG remains significantly cheaper compared to conventional fuels and continues to offer major savings for daily commuters and commercial vehicle operators.

The latest revision comes shortly after a Rs 2-per-kg increase announced earlier this week. Similar pricing changes were also introduced in Mumbai, where CNG rates recently climbed to Rs 84 per kg.

The pressure on domestic fuel prices follows continued uncertainty in international energy markets, particularly after the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil and gas supplies.

The disruption has pushed up import costs worldwide and placed additional financial stress on Indian energy suppliers already dealing with rising input expenses.

Transport experts say the repeated increase may soon affect public travel costs across Delhi-NCR, where thousands of autos, taxis and buses depend on CNG.

Several commuter groups and transport unions are closely watching the situation, with concerns growing that operators could seek fare revisions if costs continue rising.

Economists warn that higher CNG rates may gradually contribute to inflation by increasing transport and delivery expenses, eventually affecting household budgets through rising service and goods prices.

The latest hike also comes amid broader fuel price revisions across India, with petrol and diesel rates recently witnessing their first notable increase in nearly four years.

Officials have indicated that market stability will largely depend on how quickly international energy supply routes return to normal and whether geopolitical tensions ease in the coming weeks.
