Sarnath: The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath, located near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea. UNESCO announced the decision on Saturday via social media, marking a significant milestone for cultural preservation in India. The addition brings India’s total number of recognized World Heritage sites to 45, highlighting the country’s rich historical and architectural legacy on the international stage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the decision, praising the global recognition of a site deeply rooted in the history of Buddhism. Modifying its enduring importance, Prime Minister Modi noted that Sarnath remains linked to Lord Buddha, whose core teachings of wisdom, compassion, and peace continue to inspire global communities. Sarnath holds historic spiritual importance as the location where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, setting into motion the Dharmachakra, or Wheel of Dharma.

The formal inscription follows a multi-year effort by the Indian government, which submitted a comprehensive dossier titled Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for the 2025-26 nomination cycle. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat previously confirmed the proposal in Parliament, highlighting the extensive archaeological remains, ancient stupas, monasteries, and Ashokan pillars present at the location. Preserved across dedicated archaeological zones, Sarnath continues to serve as an active pilgrimage hub for global tourists and spiritual seekers.
