Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another spell of intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across the state over the next 48 hours. The weather office has issued a series of alerts, warning that several districts could witness heavy to extremely heavy showers, increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods and disruption of essential services.
According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected across many parts of the state on July 19, while isolated areas in Kangra, Mandi and Kullu may receive heavy rainfall. These three districts have been placed under an Orange Alert, signalling the possibility of severe weather conditions. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for Chamba, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, where heavy rain is likely at isolated locations.
The weather department has cautioned that conditions are expected to become more severe on July 20, when rainfall activity is predicted to peak. A Red Alert has been declared for Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Hamirpur and Una, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall and potential weather-related emergencies. Meanwhile, Chamba, Kullu and Bilaspur will remain under an Orange Alert.
Officials said all district administrations and emergency response agencies have been advised to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness to deal with any rain-related incidents.
The IMD has warned that continuous rainfall could lead to a sharp rise in water levels in rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs. There is also an increased possibility of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and falling rocks in vulnerable hill regions. Road connectivity may be affected due to debris and slope failures, while damage to electricity infrastructure and uprooting of trees cannot be ruled out.
Residents living near rivers and low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant, while those in landslide-prone regions have been advised to exercise extreme caution.
The administration has appealed to both locals and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Visitors planning trips to the hill state have been asked to monitor weather updates and road conditions before setting out, as sudden changes in weather could lead to traffic disruptions and temporary road closures.
With the monsoon expected to remain active over the coming days, authorities have emphasised the importance of following official advisories and avoiding risky locations until weather conditions improve.
