Rome/New Delhi: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has added another milestone to her political career, with her government becoming the longest continuously serving administration in Italy’s postwar history. As Meloni marked the record, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his Italian counterpart with a special message highlighting both her leadership and her role in strengthening India-Italy ties.

Meloni’s government has now completed 1,413 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous postwar record of 1,412 uninterrupted days held by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second government between 2001 and 2005.

What Did PM Modi Say To Giorgia Meloni?

Congratulating Meloni on the milestone, PM Modi described the achievement as a reflection of the trust placed in her by the Italian people.

“Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history. This milestone is a reflection of the trust and confidence of the Italian people in her leadership,” Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Meloni’s contribution to the growing relationship between New Delhi and Rome, particularly the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.

Modi said her friendship had been instrumental in strengthening the partnership and expressed hope that the two countries would continue working closely towards a prosperous future for their people.

He concluded his message by wishing Meloni continued success in the years ahead.

Giorgia Meloni Breaks Silvio Berlusconi’s Record

The milestone carries particular significance given Italy’s long history of frequently changing governments.

Meloni’s administration crossed the 1,413-day mark, overtaking the 1,412 consecutive days recorded by Berlusconi’s second government.

Italy has witnessed dozens of different governments in the eight decades since World War II, making long periods of uninterrupted political leadership relatively uncommon.

Meloni took office in October 2022, becoming the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Italy.

What Did Giorgia Meloni Say After Making History?

Reacting to the milestone, Meloni credited Italian voters for giving her government the opportunity to provide political stability.

“This stability exists thanks to the Italians who in 2022 gave us their trust. A trust that we have never considered a blank check and that we will never take for granted,” she wrote on X.

Meloni said her government had focused on increasing employment, reducing unemployment, supporting families and businesses, strengthening security and managing public finances.

She also pointed to efforts aimed at increasing Italy’s influence and credibility on the international stage.

The Italian Prime Minister said she would meet supporters of her Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party in Bari on Friday evening to review what the government had achieved so far and discuss the road ahead.

India-Italy Ties Under Modi And Meloni

India and Italy have seen their relationship expand significantly during Modi and Meloni’s tenures.

The two countries elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2023, with cooperation covering areas including defence, trade, clean energy, science and technology, connectivity and people-to-people ties.

Modi and Meloni’s warm public interactions have also frequently attracted attention on social media, but beyond the viral moments, both leaders have repeatedly emphasised expanding strategic and economic cooperation between the two countries.

With Meloni now setting a new postwar longevity record, Modi’s congratulatory message once again highlighted the growing political relationship between New Delhi and Rome.
