Ambala: The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey under-construction commercial structure in Haryana’s Ambala City climbed to six on Monday morning after rescue teams pulled two additional bodies from the rubble. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Dhulkot area when the building suddenly caved in while labourers were casting the concrete roof slab on the third floor.
Between 35 and 40 workers were reportedly on site when the structure gave way, trapping multiple people beneath heavy slabs of concrete and steel reinforcement. Local residents were the first to initiate rescue efforts before district authorities, local police, fire services, and teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force reached the scene with earth-moving machinery to clear the debris.
Medical personnel confirmed that a total of 12 injured victims were transported to the Ambala Civil Hospital following the collapse. According to hospital authorities, six individuals were declared dead, while nine patients received emergency care. Most of the injured have since been discharged after treatment, leaving three patients currently admitted in stable condition.
The deceased include migrant and local labourers identified as Kalia Ram and Shastri Ram from Uttar Pradesh, Roop Singh from Punjab, and Rajinder Kumar from Haryana. Grieving relatives gathered at the site and the hospital on Monday, demanding the registration of a formal First Information Report against the building’s owner and contractors for gross negligence.
Preliminary administrative findings indicate that the structure was unauthorized and that construction was proceeding without valid municipal permits or structural clearances. Senior district officials affirmed that a specialized inquiry committee is being constituted to determine the technical cause of the structural failure, inspect civic approval lapses, and initiate strict legal action against those responsible.
