Chandigarh- Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh today paid floral tributes to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan and former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.

Describing June 26, 1975, as the darkest chapters in the history of Indian democracy, the Governor said that the proclamation of the Emergency witnessed an unprecedented assault on democratic values. He said that the fundamental rights of citizens were curtailed, freedom of the press was suppressed, opposition leaders were imprisoned and civil liberties were severely restricted during that period.

The Governor said that Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan emerged as the guiding force of the movement to restore democracy, while Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s unwavering commitment to democratic values and national interest remains an enduring source of inspiration. He said that the sacrifices made by countless democracy defenders during those challenging times can never be forgotten.

Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh said that the nation will always remain indebted to the brave individuals who endured imprisonment, persecution and immense hardship to safeguard democratic institutions and uphold the Constitution. Their courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals continue to inspire future generations, he added.
