Hyderabad: Filmmaker Buchi Babu Sana on Saturday issued a public apology after facing criticism over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character in his recently released film Peddi. The director said the makers have taken audience concerns seriously and decided to make changes to certain portions of the film.

The Telugu sports-action drama, starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, came under fire from a section of viewers who accused the film of objectifying women through its camera treatment, dialogues and romantic sequences. One particular scene sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many viewers alleging that it depicted inappropriate behaviour and lacked sensitivity in its portrayal of consent.

Responding to the controversy, Sana shared a statement on X, saying that cinema should entertain, inspire and connect with audiences without making anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected.

“We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously,” the director said. He added that he has always respected women both on and off screen and that it was never the intention of the filmmakers to objectify or disrespect any female character.

“If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised and sincerely apologise,” he stated.

Sana said the production team has reviewed the feedback and will implement necessary modifications to the scenes that have drawn criticism. He emphasised that filmmakers have a responsibility to remain mindful of changing social perspectives and audience sensitivities.

“Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment to responsible storytelling, the director said every woman deserves to be represented with dignity and respect. He also thanked audiences for expressing their concerns and opinions openly.

Janhvi Kapoor has not publicly commented on the controversy surrounding her role in the film.

Set in rural Andhra Pradesh during the 1980s, Peddi follows the story of a lower-caste villager, played by Ram Charan, who turns to wrestling in a bid to earn recognition and dignity for his community. The film also features Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Divyenndu and Boman Irani in key roles.

Released on June 4, Peddi has received mixed-to-negative reviews from both critics and audiences, with the debate over its portrayal of women becoming one of the major talking points surrounding the film.
