Kathmandu — Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki is set to expand her cabinet this evening, with seven new ministers expected to be inducted, officials from the President’s Office confirmed. Details regarding their portfolios and responsibilities have not yet been officially disclosed.

The cabinet expansion comes as part of efforts to strengthen the interim government following the Gen-Z-led movement that reshaped Nepal’s political landscape earlier this month.

Earlier on Sunday, Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met Kulman Ghising, Minister for Energy, Urban Development and Physical Infrastructure, at Singha Durbar. The ambassador reaffirmed India’s support for the development of Nepal’s critical sectors, reflecting continued diplomatic engagement following the country’s recent political transition.

Ghising, a key figure in the interim government formed after the Gen-Z revolution, highlighted India’s role in Nepal’s infrastructure and energy sectors, noting the importance of further cooperation. The meetings underscore India’s interest in close strategic collaboration during Nepal’s transitional phase.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held a telephonic conversation last week with Sushila Karki, reinforcing bilateral ties. Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and now the country’s first female Prime Minister, assumed office on 12 September following the mass protests that led to the resignation of KP Sharma Oli.

The Gen-Z revolution, which began on 8 September, involved youth-led protests demanding accountability, transparency, and political reform, claiming 74 lives amid clashes with security forces. Karki’s appointment was endorsed by the protesters, citing her independence and integrity.

The interim Prime Minister will remain in office until March 2026, when elections are scheduled to select a new executive head.
