Kangpokpi: Violent protests broke out in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after a section of people from the Kuki community protested against the alleged detention of six villagers by security forces, officials said on Sunday.
The demonstrations began around 10 pm on Saturday and continued until approximately midnight in Motbung and surrounding areas. Protesters reportedly burnt tyres on roads and pelted stones at government vehicles during the agitation.
Why Were Protests Held In Kangpokpi?
The protesters alleged that six village volunteers from Kholen were detained by security forces without being given a reason.
Kholen is located near Chawangkining village, which has a Naga-majority population. The area had recently witnessed an attack by armed miscreants, according to officials.
Security forces used tear gas shells to disperse the protesters after the situation escalated.
National Highway-2 Targeted During Protest
During the demonstrations, protesters allegedly dug up sections of National Highway-2 at Motbung using heavy construction equipment. The highway connects Imphal with Dimapur.
Officials said the move was aimed at restricting the movement of security force vehicles in the area.
Some protesters sustained injuries during the clashes and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Detained Villagers Later Released
A senior official said the six detained village volunteers were subsequently released by security forces.
Following their release, the protests came to an end. Officials said the situation in the area is currently under control.
