Siwan — A Bihar Police constable attached to the District Intelligence Unit in Siwan was suspended after a video surfaced online showing him deploying an AK-47 assault rifle during a student demonstration. Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha confirmed the immediate suspension alongside the initiation of departmental proceedings, noting that formal inquiries are underway to investigate the breach of explicit standing orders against opening fire on assembly crowds. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported from the incident.
The violent confrontation occurred on July 25 when student groups staged demonstrations across several Bihar districts as part of a statewide shutdown called over examination paper leak controversies and subsequent law enforcement responses. Clashes and stone-pelting were reported at multiple locations, including Patna’s Dak Bungalow crossing, leading to widespread detentions. Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, condemned the police response, accusing authorities of employing excessive force against unarmed student protesters and demanding accountability from top state leadership.
