Yoga Practice Prohibited Inside Gurdwara Premises, Directs Akal Takht Jathedar

CHANDIGARH — The highest temporal seat of Sikhism, the Akal Takht, has reaffirmed strict guidelines regarding religious decorum, declaring that yoga sessions and physical exercise routines have no place within gurdwara complexes. Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj urged the global Sikh community to strictly maintain the sanctity of Guru Ghars, reminding devotees that these holy institutions are fundamentally intended for spiritual devotion, scriptural study, and community prayer.

Elaborating on the religious code of conduct, the Jathedar clarified that performing yoga postures or fitness exercises within complex grounds undermines established Sikh Maryada. He noted that while individuals are free to engage in personal wellness activities and yoga at home or in appropriate public facilities, mixing non-Sikh practices within sacred places of worship compromises their traditional dignity. The primary focus of every gurdwara must remain steadfastly centered on Gurbani Kirtan, Naam Simran, and spiritual reflection.

The appeal emphasizes collective responsibility among the Sikh Sangat to safeguard revered traditions against deviations. By issuing this directive, the temporal leadership aims to ensure that the environment inside all gurdwaras remains fully dedicated to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, preserving the sacred space for worshipers seeking spiritual peace.
