Edmonton: A 23-year-old woman of Punjabi origin has died after allegedly being strangled by her live-in partner in Edmonton, Alberta, in a case that Canadian police are treating as an intimate partner homicide. Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old man and charged him with second-degree murder.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers responded to a residence in the Silver Berry neighbourhood on the evening of July 9 after receiving reports of an unconscious woman with suspicious injuries. When police arrived, they found Damanpreet Kaur in critical condition. She was provided emergency medical assistance at the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remained under treatment for several days.
Despite doctors’ efforts, Kaur succumbed to her injuries on July 12.
Autopsy Confirms Homicide
An autopsy carried out on July 14 concluded that the young woman’s death was a homicide. Investigators later confirmed that strangulation was the cause of death.
Following the investigation, police arrested 22-year-old Ritish Kumar on July 22 and formally charged him with second-degree murder. Officials said the incident appears to be a case of intimate partner violence and clarified that no other suspects are being sought.
