Ludhiana: Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu took an unusual route to spread the message of cleanliness by personally participating in a sanitation drive at Ludhiana Railway Station. Instead of limiting himself to reviewing arrangements, the minister stepped onto the railway tracks wearing protective gloves and collected litter scattered along the rails.
Armed with garbage bags, Bittu was seen removing a variety of waste, including fruit peels, used diapers, plastic bottles, food wrappers and other discarded items lying on the tracks. His hands-on participation drew the attention of commuters, railway employees and local residents gathered at the station.
Speaking during the drive, the Union Minister said the objective was not to create a publicity moment but to encourage people to take greater responsibility for keeping public spaces clean. He remarked that sanitation workers and mechanised equipment could easily handle the task, but a personal effort was intended to inspire behavioural change among citizens.
Bittu urged passengers to avoid throwing waste onto railway tracks and platforms, stressing that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility rather than the duty of civic authorities alone. He appealed to people to dispose of garbage only in designated bins and help preserve public infrastructure.
Referring to the nationwide cleanliness campaign launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bittu said the vision of a cleaner India can only be achieved through active public participation. He added that government initiatives would succeed only when citizens adopt cleanliness as a daily habit.
The cleanliness drive received appreciation from many passengers and railway staff, who described the minister’s direct involvement as an encouraging gesture that highlighted the importance of civic responsibility. The campaign also served as a reminder that individual actions can play a significant role in improving public hygiene and maintaining shared spaces.
