Chandigarh: The southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across Punjab over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting fresh spells of rainfall across several districts. A yellow alert has been issued for multiple regions, while Chandigarh is also likely to witness intermittent showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
The recent rainfall has brought noticeable relief from soaring temperatures, with the state’s daytime mercury falling below the seasonal average in many places. However, humidity levels continue to remain high, making weather conditions uncomfortable despite the drop in temperature.
Heavy Rainfall Recorded in Parts of Punjab
Several districts received moderate to heavy showers during the last 24 hours, improving weather conditions and providing relief to residents. Rainfall activity was particularly significant in parts of central Punjab, while scattered showers were reported from northern and eastern districts.
Meteorological officials believe rainfall intensity may increase further as favourable monsoon conditions persist over northwestern India.
Power Consumption Remains High Despite Cooler Weather
Although rainfall has helped reduce temperatures, electricity demand across Punjab continues to remain above the 15,000 MW mark. Officials attribute the sustained demand to persistent humidity, which has kept cooling appliances in constant use across urban and rural areas.
The state continues to meet demand through its own generation as well as power drawn from the central grid.
Reservoirs Continue Receiving Healthy Inflows
Continuous rainfall in the catchment areas has improved inflows into major reservoirs managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). Authorities are closely monitoring water levels while maintaining regulated discharge from dams to ensure flood safety downstream.
The increased inflow is expected to strengthen water availability for irrigation during the ongoing paddy cultivation season.
Rainfall Likely to Continue This Week
The Meteorological Department has predicted that rain activity will continue over Punjab during the next several days. Heavy showers are likely at isolated locations, particularly in districts bordering Himachal Pradesh, while light to moderate rainfall is expected across much of the state.
Officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow weather advisories, especially in districts where heavy rainfall warnings remain in effect. The continuing monsoon activity is expected to keep temperatures under control while offering favourable conditions for agriculture across Punjab.
