Shimla: After a brief spell of relatively dry weather, Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness another phase of intense monsoon activity as a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to become active from July 6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across several districts over the next few days and urged residents and tourists to remain cautious.
The weather office has issued an Orange Alert for Mandi and Sirmaur districts on Monday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A Yellow Alert has also been announced for Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, and Solan, where moderate to heavy showers are expected.
For July 7, the Orange Alert has been extended to Kangra, Chamba, and Sirmaur, while Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla remain under a Yellow Alert due to the possibility of persistent rainfall and thunderstorms.
Rain Likely to Persist Until Midweek
According to IMD forecasts, widespread rain is expected to continue across most parts of the state until July 9. Although showers are likely to remain active after that, their intensity may gradually reduce as the Western Disturbance weakens later in the week.
Officials believe the fresh spell could once again increase the risk of waterlogging, landslides, and flash floods in vulnerable regions.
Strong Winds Forecast for Tribal Areas
Apart from rainfall, the Meteorological Department has warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph in the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti over the coming days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely in several other districts.
People travelling through mountainous terrain have been advised to monitor weather updates before starting their journey.
Monsoon Continues to Perform Above Average
The southwest monsoon entered Himachal at the end of June and spread across the entire state within two days. While rainfall eased after the initial burst, the state has still recorded precipitation well above the seasonal average during the first few days of July.
Meteorological data indicates that cumulative rainfall since the beginning of the month remains significantly higher than normal, reflecting an active monsoon season despite the recent temporary lull.
Advisory Issued for Residents and Tourists
The IMD has appealed to people to avoid venturing near rivers, seasonal streams, and landslide-prone stretches during periods of heavy rain. Travellers have also been advised to postpone unnecessary journeys to high-altitude destinations if weather conditions deteriorate.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on vulnerable areas as another wet spell is expected to impact several parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next three to four days.
