Falta: The wife of Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan was arrested on Saturday for allegedly planning a violent assault on the Falta police station earlier this month in an attempt to forcibly free him from police custody. Regina Bibi, who had been hiding since the incident took place, was apprehended by law enforcement officials in the Julpia area of South 24 Parganas district following a specific tip-off.

According to police authorities, Regina Bibi was a primary conspirator responsible for gathering supporters and coordinating the march toward the police station. Investigators revealed that a secret meeting was conducted under her guidance a day prior to the violence, where plans were made to assemble a crowd three kilometres away from the facility before advancing. Consequently, she faces severe legal charges, including violations under both the Arms Act and the Explosives Act.

The initial incident turned chaotic when an agitated mob damaged police transport and tried to breach the law enforcement facility to rescue Khan, who had been arrested near the Nepal border facing multiple criminal charges. The situation required the intervention of central security forces, who used a baton charge to disperse the crowd, leading to the arrest of twenty-five individuals so far. Khan, who previously compared himself to a resilient movie character during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign, had later pulled out of the Falta re-election, which was subsequently won by a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate.

The apprehension of Regina Bibi aligns with an ongoing crackdown against criminal syndicates and influential political figures initiated after the change of government in the May assembly elections. Recently, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari publicly stated that the new administration would maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward lawlessness and instructed the police to take strict measures against station attackers. The police intend to present Regina Bibi in court to seek further custody and investigate if a larger network assisted her actions.
