Amritsar: Special religious ceremonies were held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on Friday to mark the anniversary of the June 1984 events, with a large number of devotees from India and abroad gathering to pay their respects.

On the occasion, Sri Akal Takht Sahib’s acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gadgaj addressed the Sikh community and urged people to remember the historical events while strengthening Panthic unity.

During his address, the Jathedar described the events of June 1984 as a significant chapter in Sikh history that had a profound impact on the community’s collective consciousness and struggle. He said historians and analysts across the world continue to view the resistance witnessed during that period as an example of extraordinary courage.

The Jathedar also raised issues related to Sikh identity, religious rights and constitutional equality. He said the Sikh community has consistently preserved its distinct identity and should continue efforts to safeguard it in the future.

Appealing to Sikhs living abroad, he urged them to remain connected with their roots, describing Punjab as the historical and cultural homeland of the Sikh community. He also emphasised the importance of connecting younger generations with Sikh history, heritage, gurdwaras and cultural traditions.

Thousands of devotees visited Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib to pay obeisance during the commemorative events. Extensive security arrangements were made by Punjab Police, security agencies and civil administration to ensure peaceful observance of the anniversary.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also deployed a large number of task force personnel to manage the gathering and maintain order during the events.
